“Weep You No More Sad Fountains” Song

Composed by Gustav Holst in 1903 (poem anonymous but questionably written by John Dowland in the 1500’s), “Weep You No More Sad Fountains” is a lovely burial song that has made many comebacks over the years, most recently for Sense and Sensibility.  Beautifully sung by Kate Winslet, it has a haunting quality that I really like.

This is dedicated to my dad, may he rest in peace.

These are the lyrics, if you choose to listen, it is best to read while you listen as this is a 15th century poem:

Weep you no more sad fountains

what need you flow so fast?

Look how the snowy mountain–

Heaven’s sun doth gently waste.

But my sun’s heavenly eyes

view not your weeping that now lies sleeping.

Softly, softly, now softly, softly lies sleeping.

Sleep is a reconciling, a rest where peace begets.

Doth not the sun rise smiling when fair at evening sets?

Rest you then, rest sad eyes.

Melt not in weeping while [s]he lies sleeping.

Softly, softly, now softly, softly lies sleeping.

  1. Oh…..it’s Tuesday….he must have gone to his World, may his memory be for a blessing. I don’t know how you manage to sing without breaking down–I can’t–but this is such a beautiful poem, and you sing it so beautifully. May it accompany him on his journey to eternal Peace.

  2. May he rest in peace Lori, believe he has gone to a better place. Treasure the memories you have of him. Grieve for him, then live again.

  3. I am so sorry for your loss, and pray His peace will be present in the midst of your grief.

  4. I’m so sorry Lori. May he rest in Peace and may your memories of him ever keep you warm. I hope the New Year brings better events for you with much love and peace. This was a beautiful song in tribute.
